Fashion Journal: Day 29

My original outfit: I’m channeling my wild side in a faux fur hat with ears (another treasure from Toronto’s Kensington Market), black and grey tiger stripes shirt with shoulder cut-outs, black pearls, bubble skirt, stockings, bracelet with golden studs and oxford shoes in ochre.

Reinterpretation: I created a swimsuit from the black and grey tones with ochre embellishments layered with an asymmetrical sheer lounge dress in the tiger print. A chunky black necklace, ochre bracelet, heels and turban completes the outfit. This look will surely add some animalistic grrr to the beach side! Details:

It’s always fun to bring out one’s inner animal, especially if it has a gypsy / 70′s feel to it!

A look at the swimsuit without the lounge dress.

Fashion Journal: Day 28

My original outfit: Since I’m not a huge fan of wearing scarves around my neck, I’m wearing this bright floral one as a headband. I’m also sporting a loose white shirt, black skinny jeans and brown boots. The look is accessorized with a another headband worn around the neck, a horse chain necklace and a woven bracelet.

Reinterpretation: The model muse here is the young Kate Moss in her 90′s glory. (Fun fact: Kate and I are the same height at 5’7!) The shirt is slashed and braided into a more chic version with an extra piece worn at the ankle. The floral pattern of the scarf is now a faded print for the denim shorts, the black of the jeans is a single stripe in the shorts, and the original accessories are recycled into new bracelets. Details:

I gave her dewy pink eye shadow, lips and a brow ring for a girly yet grungy look. Note the original horse necklace is now part of the earrings!

This shirt has a grungy D.I.Y. look that turns eclectic when paired with the accessories.

Fashion Journal: Day 27

My original outfit: Oh yes, I sported the China doll / Louise Brooks haircut back in the day! And I quite like it worn with my black Peter Pan collar shirt with white stripes, green mini-skirt with white stripes (actually a child’s x-large skirt scoured from a vintage shop in Toronto’s Kensington Market), sheer black polka dot stockings, and red waist belt and flats.

Reinterpretation: I did a vintage look inspired by the 50′s with a modern edge. The skirt is turned into a cardigan with green and white chevron stripes, the shirt is now a black full skirt with white stripes graduating in thickness, sheer stockings are now gloves, while red heels and a flower brooch complete the look. The strawberry blonde bob adds the final touch! Details:

I miss my old haircut, think I’ll bring it back again one of these days.

My original outfit: I’m wearing a purple headband with white polka dots, teal sports jacket, purple shorts, gold leggings, grey socks with white frills, and mint sneakers. I wore this to play tennis (poorly) once although the gold leggings weren’t part of the original getup.

Reinterpretation: Due to the garish colour palette, this was the perfect chance to make an avant garde look inspired by Grace Jones and the great 80′s. The sports jacket and gold leggings fuse together to create a body suit, arm warmer, head piece and anklet, and the shorts transform into knee pads. The mint hue of the sneakers is now the shade of the nail colour. Details:

Gotta love her era-defining angular haircut.

Not to mention her gazelle-like stature, she’s truly a beaut!

Photos: Sketching at Boobyball 2011

The lovely Ainsley Kerr of Rethink Breast Cancer (whose portrait I sketched at TIFF last month) kindly invited me to sketch portraits of guests at Boobyball Toronto. It’s an annual fundraiser gala for breast cancer awareness and this year marks the charity’s 10th anniversary. With the theme of “a 10-year-old’s birthday party”, everything was pretty in pink, bubbly and fun! I donned my frilly pink crinoline for the night and even got new brush pens in various shades of pink for the theme. Here are some highlights:

My original outfit: It’s monochrome day! I’m stepping out in a grey headband, blue plaid shirt under a blue cropped knit vest, high-waisted blue and white polka dot shorts, thigh-high grey socks, and blue and white striped peep-toe wedges.

Reinterpretation: The inspiration here is the first ladies’ wardrobe: smart jackets, elegant silhouettes and fancy head wear! The revamp sees a cropped jacket in the plaid pattern but with a tweed fabric, knit vest is now a dress, and the headband and shorts material merge to create the clutch at hand. The outfit is finished with sheer stockings, nude heels and a whimsical fascinator in the shape of a button from the vest. Details:

I’m in “Great Big Book of Fashion Illustration”

I’m so honoured to be one of the many talented illustrators published in “Great Big Book of Fashion Illustration” by Martin Dawber! An even bigger honour is to be in the same book as illustrators I admire such as Danielle Meder, Charline Chua, Shingo Shimizu, Marguerite Sauvage and many more.

The book is available at your local bookstore and online. Here are my pages in the book:

Martin also did an unpublished Q&A with me for the book in February 2010:

Do you prefer the term ILLUSTRATOR or ARTIST?
I don’t prefer one over the other although illustrator is more specific and accurate in describing what I do. To me, this is what each term means: an illustrator is a person who is hired to visually communicate someone else’s idea. An artist is a person who expresses pure emotions and messages of their own regard in a medium of their choice. Professionally, I would be an illustrator because that’s what I do for a living. Outside of work, I’m an artist when I’m sketching my ideas just for fun or as roughs for personal pieces.

Did you attend any kind of school for drawing?
Yes, I studied the Bachelor of Applied Arts: Illustration program at Sheridan Institute in Oakville, Canada (Just west of Toronto).

How did your education benefit your career?
It taught me the principles of drawing, the emotional connection of an image, and the power it has to convey an idea. It also taught us business skills essential to surviving as a freelance illustrator. The program was full of helpful teachers and a warm student community – felt like a second home.

Were you already interested in Fashion?
Oh yes. I always wanted a career related to fashion but also knew I wasn’t cut out for constructing clothing. Sewing, measuring, fitting, it just wasn’t for me. What I do love is drawing clothes and my own designs.

When it comes to your own work, what inspires you?
Mostly fashion, music, pin-up girls, food and nature.

Do you have any favourite fashion designers – any which specifically inspire your own illustrations?
I love love love Tarina Tarantino, Betsey Johnson, Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen.

Can you describe your typical ‘start to finish’ workflow?  Talk a little bit about the process of creating an illustration.
Before I start, I usually already have an idea of what I want to create. Then I do some sketches to see which compositions work, flesh out a finalized, detailed sketch and scan it into the computer. Next I hop on the internet to gather reference images and for inspiration. For the actual creation of the image I tend to use Illustrator for vectorizing and getting the flat colours, and Photoshop to add textures and painted details.

Do you ever have creative slumps? What do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
Of course I do. What I find gets me out of them is to dance, go for a walk, meet up with a friend, exercise – anything that gets me moving because it improves my mood and gets me into a creative mode.

What would be your perfect job or assignment?
Oh where to begin. I would love to have my illustrations appear on a billboard in a high-traffic world city (like Times Square in New York City), collaborate with a major fashion label in apparel / textile design, advertising campaign, and to be a regular illustrator for a major fashion magazine.

How do you market and promote your work?
Through a promotional hailstorm of emailing prospective clients, direct mail promos, meetings, participating in shows and conventions, networking with friends and co-workers.

Do you feel running websites and blogs helps your career?
It helps tremendously. It’s become the norm and is a great way to keep fans and clients updated with news, shows, and work progress. With social media like Facebook and Twitter, it can really help to establish a devoted following and that is so valuable to an artist.

What contributions do you feel an illustrator offers to society?
We make the world a more beautiful and fun place to live in. We can’t help but remind everyone through our work that hey, it’s ok to kick off your shoes and do a wild dance from time to time!

What advice would you offer someone who is just entering the world of illustration?
Know your strengths and perfect them, don’t be afraid of failure, setbacks and rejection (because typically there will be plenty), work hard but keep a balanced lifestyle, exercise, eat right, read and most importantly, don’t give up!

Fashion Journal: Day 24

Buy print | Featured on à la mode

My original outfit: Not only am I a fan of Imogen Heap’s music, I also adore her fashion sense. Always unique and delightful in floral prints, voluminous skirts and warm hues, she’s the inspiration behind this look. I’m wearing a beige shirt with shiny shoulder embellishments, a pin-stripe white vest, pink floral print skirt, layered stockings, and beige strappy heels. The look is completed with flower hair pins, brooches and an arm warmer.

Reinterpretation: I attended Imogen’s concert and this is my take on her outfit that night (circa 2006). I kept her signature loose updo with a headband recycled from the stocking pattern, a cropped jacket marrying elements from the vest and shirt, A-line floral print dress plus shiny embellishments, red crinoline, over-the-knee socks reworked from the arm warmer, and boots stemming from the heels. The flower pins are now brooches, and the brooches are now rings. Details:

I love how we seem to be dancing together! Perhaps to “Goodnight and Go” or “Loose Ends“?

This floral print was loads of fun to draw.

On another note, here’s my old illustration of Imogen from 2006.

Photos: Sketching at Epique Lounge

Above: He asked me to draw lipstick marks all over! Wish I had thought of it.

I’ve been doing lots of on-site portrait sketching gigs lately! These are the latest from Saturday, September 24 at Epique Lounge in Yorkville, Toronto. I was (gladly) hired last minute to sketch at a private birthday function. It was unlike any previous sketching experiences because A: it took place later at night (10pm – midnight), B: people were in better, more fun-loving spirits thanks to the alcohol, and C: I sketched in semi-darkness so it was fun to see how the sketches turned out after.

It was also refreshing to draw mostly men for a change as the sitters from previous gigs were mainly women. Needless to say I had a blast! Check out portraits of the birthday guests below:

Photos: Sketching at Shop Til You Drop 2011

What a night it was sketching at LOULOU magazine’s Shop ‘Til You Drop 2011! I was at Banana Republic (Yorkville location) in Toronto drawing portraits of shoppers as part of an in-store flash sale event. I literally didn’t rest for a second save for one washroom jaunt as there were non-stop line ups around the store for me. Who knew getting your portrait done would be such a hit? Twas a great night spent chatting up shopper after shopper, exchanging contacts and I hope to do more of these events!

What made the night extra special was the brand new brush pens I drew with – they’re AMAZING. I love the line width variation / sketchy quality they provided, I’ve been missing out using straight up pens and sharpies! Plus the lovely folks at Banana Republic gave me some clothes from the latest collection to wear for the night (including the purple shirt above). Some highlights from the night:
