Thanks to Lisa Ng of The Hip & Urban Girl’s Guide for featuring me as girl of the week! I first met Lisa at one of my portrait drawing events at The Bay where she was Dj’ing. Her bubbly energy and fun playlist made the event. In this new interview, I talk about who inspires me, my fave spots in Toronto and what I would say to my 20-year old self.

It was fun sketching portraits last night at the spring 2012 Shop Til You Drop event by LOULOU magazine! It took place at Fairview Mall a.k.a. the mall that defines my teen-hood. It’s been my longest-running neighbourhood mall and where I had my first retail jobs at Esprit and Club Monaco. Ah the memories…

I must have a thing for two-toned lip colours since several portraits turned out that way. The event was super lively as shoppers formed LONG lines for swag bags, giveaways, yummy bites and of course, my portraits. Here are photos from my first Shop Til You Drop sketching event in September 2011.

Featured on Pink Mafia

At last, my illustration of MGMT is complete! I captured the band in a visual fashion akin to the sound they’re famous for: kaleidoscopically psychedelic.

I’ve been meaning to illustrate in a format other than the standard square or rectangle. The circle felt perfect since it’s representative of the kaleidoscope viewfinder and it’s the shape of a vinyl record so there’s an added tie to the music theme. I gave each band member a plethora of colours scattered with geometric shapes and a prism for the kaleidoscope effect. Also in the mix are corresponding music instruments!

The most fun and challenging part was fitting the funky shapes and instruments into the prism while looking like a kaleidoscope and not overshadowing the band members. I practically lived in a kaleidoscope for a week rearranging and tweaking the opacity, tilt and size of each shape. It was certainly a labour of love! Now, back to fondly waiting for their third album…

Great big thanks to Ashley MacIntyre for inviting me to sketch at M5V Realty‘s Condos & Cocktails party last night! It was a new condo development party for The Carlaw at Dundas and Carlaw in Toronto. Another chic night with stylish people, finger foods, live violin music by Yosvani Castañeda, and of course, my portraits! Some highlights below.
